EcoTech III - Regenerative Systems

Fall 2022

We acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the people of the Monacan Indian Nation, and the contact-period territory of the alliance of Siouan tribes and subtribes of the nations of the Monacan, the Manahoac, the Occaneechi, the Saponi, and the Tutelo. Importantly, we also acknowledge the multitude of more-than-human kin as traditional custodians of the land in and around what we now call Charlottesville, VA. The faculty of this class are providing this statement because acknowledgment is an important step toward not only recognizing and disrupting colonial structures and practices of landscape architecture but laying the groundwork for any regenerative practice. A significant portion of this class will be focused on a heavily impacted landscape that is situated between the historic Monacan capital of Rassawek and the town of Monasukapanough. The watershed was home to tens of thousands of Indigenous People prior to the colonial period, and most of the population was organize daround the larger floodplains. Colonial frameworks continue to propel the erasure and oppression of natural systems and Indigenous People in our region.
